Over 200 scientists from 22 countries participate in the International Conference on Functional Analysis

On September 19, 2017 the ceremonial opening of the International Conference on Functional Analysis dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Stefan Banach’s birth was held in the Assembly Hall of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. More than 200 scientists from 22 countries applied to take part in the conference.

Having told about the history of one of the oldest higher educational establishments in Eastern Europe, the Vice-Rector for Research Roman Gladyshevskii greeted the participants of the event on behalf of Lviv University’s administration. Mr. Gladyshevskii strongly emphasized the mathematical research conducted by the University scholars and strong traditions connected with it.

“Today the University of Lviv is one of the best educational establishments in Ukraine. Our University’s excellent reputation has been established by honorable academic traditions, experienced scientists and young researchers. May all of you make the most of time spent at the University of Lviv, may you work productively, get new ideas and become participants in interesting discussions,” Roman Gladyshevskii addressed the scientists.

Moreover, the greetings were sent by Petro Kalenyuk, Director of the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Fundamental Sciences of the Lviv Polytechnic National University, Roman Kushnir, Director of Pidstryhach Institute for Applied Problems of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and Volodymyr Mykhalets, a representative of the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The honored guests of the scholarly meeting stressed that a large-scale conference is a significant event for the entire European mathematical community.

At the end of the ceremonial opening the Deputy Mayor of Lviv Andriy Moskalenko expressed his gratitude to Lviv University for numerous scientific events and assured that the development of science is one of the priorities for Lviv City Council.

During the plenary session the Chairperson of the Department of Geometry and Topology of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the University Professor Taras Banakh and Associate Professor of the Department Yaroslav Prytula presented their report on the personality of Stefan Banach and his contribution to mathematics.

 

The conference lasts three days, during which leading mathematicians will discuss the key issues of functional analysis and related disciplines. On the whole, the scientists will present 195 reports.
