IVANYCHUK Roman Ivanovych (27 May 1929, the village of Trach, now – Kosiv raion, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast) – a writer, professor (1995). He graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (1957); worked as a teacher (1957-63); head of the Prose Department in the “Zhovten” (now “Dzvin”) magazine (1963-1990); Professor of the Ukrainian Literature Department of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (since 1995).

Research interests: “blank pages” in national history.

He is the author of the collections of short stories “Prut Carries the Ice” (1958), “Do not Cut the Ash Trees” (1961), “Under the Temple Vault” (1961),  “Poplar`s Blizzard” (1965), “House n the Mountain” (1969), “White Nights (1975); the trilogies “The edge of the Broken Path; novels and novellas “Mallow” (Janissaries, 1968, 1992),  “Crane cry” (1968, published in 1988), “Bloody Wine” (1977), ” The Manuscript from Rus`ka Street” (1979), “water from the stone”(1982), “The fourth Dimension” (1984), “The scars on the rock” (1987), “The Horde” (1989, 1992), “Because the War is the War” (1989), “The Death of Judas” (1997), “Bless, My Soul, The Lord” (1993), “Kosmack Gerdan” (2002) and others.

He was a People’s Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (1990-94), a chairman of the Prosvita association (since 1988). Ivanychuk was awarded  A. Holovka prize (1979), the T.  Shevchenko State Prize (1984); the I. Mazepa Prize (1999), the Hero of Ukraine Prize.
