The experience of the national and liberation movements of Ukraine and Hungary was discussed

On December 15, 2016 the round table “National and liberation movements in the Central and Eastern Europe in 40-50-s of the XX century: experience of Ukraine and Hungary” took place in the Mirror Hall of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

The Chairperson of the department of Contemporary History of Ukraine named after Mykhailo Hrushevsky Professor Oleksii Sukhyi greeted the participants of the scientific meeting and wished everybody fruitful discussions and productive work.

The Vice-rector for research, teaching and international cooperation Mariia Zubrytska emphasized on the importance of the academic ties between Ukraine and Hungary noting that it was important for Lviv university to intensify the cooperation with foreign partners.

Mariia Oleksiyivna stressed that the academic discussion about the tragic experience of Soviet repressions was important for both nations. This experience, in Mariia Zubrytska’s opinion, would help to reflect together on the tragic events of the middle of the XX century and make our future secure.

The Consul of Hungary in Uzhhorod Laslo Vida thanked for the possibility to conduct International roundtable at Lviv university. The diplomat stressed that this year had marked 25 years since our countries established diplomatic relations and declared the basic principles of relations – good-neighborliness and cooperation. He emphasized that Hungary consistently supported Ukraine’s sovereignty during that time and it stayed on the side of Ukraine at this difficult time of the armed conflict with Russia.

Laslo Vida identified himself with Mariia Oleksiyivna’s opinion about the importance of the joint discussing the theme of Soviet repressions experience for the fate of the nations and development of cultural and scientific relations between the countries. The common tragedy is not only the theme of the today roundtable but it is the subject of the dialogue between scientific institutions and scientists.

During the event the Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Transcarpathia Regional book “Rehabilitated by History” Oleksii Korsun delivered a report in which he told about political and administrative measures of the coercive influence on the peasants in the process of Sovietization and collectivization in Transcarpathia in 1944-1945.

The researcher of the Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Candidate of historical sciences Mykhailo Romaniuk reported about the forms and methods of the struggle of the armed underground of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists in Lviv region against the Soviet totalitarian regime (1947- the middle of the 1950s).

Oleksandra Stasiuk, a doctoral student of the Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, highlighted the struggle of the Soviet regime with the national liberation movement during the post-war election campaigns.

The Chairperson of the department of history and social sciences of the Transcarpathia Hungarian University named after Ferenc Rakoczi (Berehove town) Yurii Chotari told about the “small work” (this term was used to define the deportation of the people of German and Hungarian nationality) on the Hungarian population of Transcarpathia (1944-1945).

The secretary of the public association “Svaliava Memorial Park Committee” Yurii Dupka told about the internment of the German population of Transcarpathia in 1944-1945.

After that the participants of the roundtable held the discussion on the coverage of national liberation and social movements in the Central and Eastern Europe in 1940-1950s in the Ukrainian and European historiography.
