Competencies

Carries out direct management of the University’s activities.  Represents the University in relations with state bodies, local self-government bodies, legal entities and individuals, and acts without a power of attorney within the limits of the powers provided for by the Law of Ukraine ‘On Higher Education’, the University Charter, and the Rector’s contract.

Manages the Rector’s Office and the University Admissions Committee.

Decides on issues related to the financial and economic activities of the University.

Directs and controls the work of faculties, the college, the Institute of Postgraduate Education and Pre-University Training,  Document Control Office, the Human Resources Department, the Accounting Service, the Planning and Finance Department, the Publishing Department, the Press Centre, the Occupational Safety Department, the Fire Safety and Civil Protection Department, the Security and Confidentiality Department, the Legal Department, the Military Registration Department, the ‘Sigma’ Higher Education Institution Automated Control System, the ‘Kamenyar’ newspaper, the authorised person for internal control, the authorised person for the prevention and combating of corruption, and the authorised person for public procurement.

Coordinates cooperation with student self-government bodies, trade union organisations of university employees and students, the ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ Science Park, and the University Alumni Association.

Professional biography

In 1980, graduated with honours from the Faculty of Chemistry of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and received the qualification of “Сhemist. Teacher of Chemistry.”

1980-1981 – Engineer at the Scientific Research Institute of Materials (Lviv); 1982-1988 – Postgraduate student, engineer, senior researcher at the Department of General Chemistry of the Lviv Polytechnic Institute.

In 1987, he defended his thesis “Phase equilibria and crystal structures of compounds in REM-Co-Ga systems, where REM is a metal of the yttrium subgroup” (supervised by Prof. B.I. Chernyak).

1988-1990 – Senior Research Fellow, Department of Semiconductor Physics, Lviv University.

1990-1997 – Researcher at the Laboratory of Crystallography and Department of Physics of Condensed Matter, University of Geneva (Switzerland, Prof. E. Parté, Prof. R. Flückiger), Professor at the Laboratory of Materials Structure, University of Savoie (Annecy, France).

In 1997, he entered the doctoral program at the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at Lviv University. In 2001, he defended his doctoral dissertation, “Intermetallics and oxides: from ideal to real crystal structure” (supervised by Prof. O.I. Bodak).

2000-2005 – Associate Professor (academic title of Associate Professor awarded in 2004), Professor (academic title of Professor awarded in 2008); 2006-2014 – Head of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

In 2012, he was elected a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the field of crystal chemistry.

2014-2025 – Vice-Rector for Science and Research at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

In 2021, he was elected a Full Member (Academician) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the field of crystal chemistry.

Since 2025 – Rector of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

Member of the Boris Paton National Prize of Ukraine Committee and member of the Committee’s New Substances and Materials Section (since 2015); Member (since 2006), Chairman (since 2022) of the Expert Council of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine on the certification of scientific personnel in chemical sciences and chemical technologies; Member of the Committee on Scientific Objects that Constitute the National Heritage of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (since 2020); Member of the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (since 2023); Member (since 2003), Vice-Chairman (since 2024) of the Scientific Council on Inorganic Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; Member of the Standing Committee on Scientific Areas of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (since 2020); Member of the Scientific Coordination Council of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (since 2022); Head of the Scientific Section “Chemistry and Chemical Technologies” of the Western Scientific Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (since 2017).

Chairman of the Committee of Crystallographers of Ukraine (since 2004); representative of Ukraine in the International Union of Crystallographers (IUCr) and the European Crystallographic Association (ECA).

Editor-in-chief of the international journal “Chemistry of Metals and Alloys”, deputy editor-in-chief of “Proceedings of the Shevchenko Scientific Society” and “Ukrainian Chemical Journal”.

Chair of the organizing committees of the “International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds” (since 2002), the International Conference “Modern Trends in Chemistry Education,” the School for Young Scientists “Diffraction Methods…,” All-Ukrainian Competition for Young Researchers “Crystals”; chair of the scientific committee of the “35th European Crystallographic Meeting”, member of the scientific committee of the “International Conference on Solid Compounds of Transition Elements” (since 2012).

Full member and member of the praesidium of the Shevchenko Scientific Society; president of the Lviv Regional Junior Academy of Sciences; Honorary Ambassador of Lviv.

In 1981, he was awarded the Medal of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR for the best student work. In 2008, he became a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, and in 2024, he became a laureate of the L.V. Pysarzhevsky Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 2018, he was awarded the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine distinction “For Scientific Achievements,” and in 2023, he received the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine distinction “For Preparing a Scientific Shift.” In 2019, he was awarded the honorary title of “Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine” and the honorary title of “Honoured Professor of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.” He received awards from the ICDD (USA, 2008-2025).

Research interests

Studying phase diagrams, crystal structures, and chemical and physical properties to figure out the relationship between the composition, structure, and properties of inorganic compounds, especially intermetallics and high-temperature superconductors. Since 2006, he has headed the Lviv Scientific School of Crystal Chemistry, which was founded at the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of Lviv University in the 1960s. He is a co-author of a series of monographs published by Springer-Verlag, Landolt-Börnstein, and Walter de Gruyter, covering the systematics of crystal structures of inorganic compounds. In total, he has co-authored 23 monographs, 4 review articles, 19 patents, over 400 scientific articles, and abstracts of over 600 conference reports. Supervisor of 16 candidate dissertations, 2 Doctor of Philosophy dissertations, and consultant for 2 doctoral dissertations defended at Lviv University and 5 dissertations defended abroad. Supervisor of 17 research projects funded by competitive selection by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the National Research Fund of Ukraine, the Lviv Regional Military Administration, and 29 international projects and grants.

He teaches lecture courses in “Inorganic Chemistry” and “Crystal Chemistry” and is the author of courses in “Methods for Determining the Crystal Structure of Substances,” “Applied Crystal Chemistry,” and “Physical Properties of Inorganic Materials” at Lviv University. He taught a lecture course on “Crystallography” at the University of Savoie. He has prepared more than 30 educational and methodological developments, including manuals on crystal chemistry in English and French. In 2010, he was elected an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine, and in 2015, an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher School of Ukraine.
