Information on the thesis

The dissertation deals with the study of scientific and pedagogical as well as church activities of Metropolitan Sylwester Sembratowich. On the basic of the archival materials, press and the published papers, the church leader’s scientific contribution in the development of theology is studied. The research analyses the pedagogical work of S. Sembratowich in different educational institutions as well as establishes his position concerning the reform of the Basilian Order and the Lviv Concilium in 1891. It identifies the main steps of the Metropolitan aimed at the reorganization of the Greek Catholic Church and studies the social work of the archbishop. The thesis outlines the change in the position of the higher clergy in the national and political Ukrainian movement in the late 19th century. The role of Cardinal Sembratovych in shaping the framework for his successors is defined.
