Annotation

A complex approach to the analysis of Ukrainian religious phraseology has been applied for the first time in the dissertation. The means of study of religious phraseological units have been tracked under consideration of scientific works (from the mid-nineteenth century – to these days). The attention has been paid to the features of recording and interpretation of religious phraseology in different periods of Ukrainian history (pre-totalitarian, totalitarian, post-totalitarian). Religious phraseology of the Ukrainian language has been considered as part of Ukrainian phraseology, which includes religious phraseological units that represent religious world of the Ukrainians as carriers of mainly Christian culture. Typological features have been defined to refer separate units to religious phraseology (religious semantics, religious connotation, nomination of Christian faith, representation of religion in its two variants (church and individual), semantic category of “sacred” and “symbolic”, presence of religious components (Christian theonims and feast names, biblical anthroponyms and toponyms, names of religious concepts and words-symbols). The genetic, thematic and structural-semantic groups of religious phraseological units have been characterized in the work.

Religious phraseological units of biblical origin have been selected on the genetic basis which are represented as inherent, adherent, occasional and non-transliteration phraseological units; religious phraseological units of folk origin (religious greeting, farewell, blessings, wishes as well as proverbs and sayings in which people expressed their understanding of the faith truths); religious phraseological units from oral and written extra-biblical sources (aphorisms of religious content of famous Ukrainian and foreign church, science, culture and art leaders). According to structural and semantic features religious phraseological units are classified into nominative; nominative-communicative, interjection-modal and communicative. In the religious phraseology we have also selected thematic fields, which consist of thematic groups, semantic subgroups and synonymous series, showing that religious phraseology is a rich linguistic layer and an important component of Ukrainian phraseology.

The role of religious idioms in teaching and educational process, in modern publicistic texts and in online space has been determined; the corpus of religious phraseology has been expanded through involving original and translated works of notionalists of our time; the understanding of the problem of extra-linguistic factors that once influenced and now influence the functioning of religious phraseological units in modern linguistic space has been deepened.

Dynamic processes in the corpus of religious phraseology of the Ukrainian language have been demonstrated based on the latest lexicographical publications and Internet resources.
