The dissertation is devoted to a comprehensive study of the genetic and geographical features of soil degradation in Lviv region.

The theoretical positions and problems of soil degradation in Lviv region are considered. Based on the analysis, systematization and generalization of stock, archival, literary and cartographic materials, we have identified 5 periods of study of degradation processes in soils (empirical, origin, formation, awareness, analysis and problem solving).

The analysis of the factors causing soil degradation has been carried out. The morphological features, physical, physicochemical properties of soils and their changes under the influence of the development of degradation processes have been studied. The levels of soil degradation have been assessed and the implementation of soil-degradation zoning of the Lviv region with the allocation of taxonomic units has been achieved. Within the Lviv region, we have identified soil degradation taxa: 2 cranes,
4 zones, 6 provinces, 14 districts and 31 districts. This classification is based on the features of the landscapes of the territory, the dominant types and types of degradation processes in soils.

It has been established that the main degradation processes characteristic of the soils of the Lviv region are erosion, compaction, destructuring, dehumification and manifestations of geo-ecological anomalies.

The ways of regulation and minimization of degradation processes in soils are proposed. To date, there are many supporters of minimal or no tillage, biological farming is gaining popularity.

The agrarians, who must realize their responsibility for the condition of the land, can significantly stop the degradation of soil. This requires that land users become full-fledged land owners. The state can, with the help of compensations, financially stimulate farmers who will carry out land conservation measures (for example, to withdraw land for a while from cultivation). For the soil protection system to really work, it is necessary to introduce a market for agricultural land.

A comprehensive study of the genetic and geographical features of soil degradation in Lviv region expands the theoretical and applied foundations, helps to establish the causes and consequences of this negative phenomenon, objectively assess the current agroecological state of soils, and draws attention to the need to introduce urgent measures for the protection and balanced use of soils.

Key words: degradation, erosion, diagnostic criterion of soil degradation, soil-degradation zoning, morphological features, physical, physicochemical properties of soil.
