Annotation

In the dissertation research, for the first time in Ukrainian historiography was raised
the problem of relations between two independent Greek Catholic provinces – the Eparchy
of Mukachevo and the Metropolitanate of Galicia. Based on the analysis of unpublished
and published archival sources, a comprehensive study of both the institutional relations
between the ecclesiastical provinces and the personal relations between their clergy was
carried out. The «short» twentieth century (1919‒1991).
Although studying the history of religion has been quite popular in Ukrainian
historiography for the last 30 years, there is currently no comprehensive research on this
issue. The author first introduced into wide circulation archival sources, which have not
yet been subjected to scientific analysis.
The study was carried out on a chronological and thematic basis. The first half of the
twentieth century was a very busy period in relations between the Eparchy of Mukachevo
and the Metropolitanate of Galicia. First, we consider their relationships through the prism
of the reform of the Order of St. Basil the Great in the Eparchy of Mukachevo, which was
carried out by Galician monks. The archpriests of Galicia and Subcarpathian Rus actively
corresponded about the reform, resolving formal and legal issues of the arrival of Galician
monks in the Eparchy of Mukachevo. Thanks to Metropolitan of Galicia Andrey
Sheptytsky that relations between the two Greek Catholic provinces were transferred to a
new plane. Metropolitan of Galicia Andrey Sheptytsky was active in cooperation with all
«Ruthenian» Greek Catholic bishops. The Mukachevo bishops were no exception.
The dissertation describes short period of existence of the autonomous Subcarpathian
Rus, headed by Avgustyn Voloshyn and when the Apostolic Administrator of that part of
the Eparchy of Mukachevo was Bishop of Kryzhevac Dionysius Nyaradi; the occupation
regimes, and then the entry of the Metropolitanate of Galicia and the Greek Catholic
Eparchy of Mukachevo into the Soviet Union and their liquidation in 1946 and 1949; was
explored the phenomenon of the «catacomb Church», namely how the priests of both
provinces adapted to the conditions of underground life. Was singled out such a majestic
figure as Metropolitan Josyf Slipyj and priests of the Eparchy of Mukachevo; also traced
how the personal relationships between the clergy of the «Church of silence» influenced
the future fate of the Greek Catholic Church and especially the legalization process.
Keywords: Greek Catholic Church, the Metropolitanate of Galicia, the Greek
Catholic Eparchy of Mukachevo, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, reform of the Order of
St. Basil the Great, Galician Basilian monks, Lviv Cathedral, liquidation of the Greek
Catholic Church in Transcarpathia, legalization of the Greek Catholic Church.
