Annotation

In the dissertation on the basis of the scientifi c-critical analysis of a considerable
quantity of archival and literary sources, the guidebook vision of Lviv of the second
half of the 19 th century – fi rst third of the 20 th century has been comprehensively
studied and restored. The content of the guidebooks has been analyzed, and their
thematic, ideological and linguistic diversity has been emphasized.
The dissertation contains historiographical analysis of publications on issues
relating to the place of Lviv in the tourist guidebooks of 1871-1939; description of
the source base covering both archival and published sources; the theoretical and
methodological principles of the dissertation and its structure have been defi ned,
which reveal the specifi cs of the researched topic.
The paper objectively analyzes the content of Lviv city guidebooks combined
with the historical vision of each chronological period, establishes the total
number of Lviv guidebooks of 1871-1939, which totals to 100 publications, and
in some cases, their authorship and the exact year of publication. A chronological
periodization of Lviv city guidebooks has been proposed, which is based on
the historical and political principle: the history of guidebooks is divided into
Austrian, Russian and Polish periods.
The typological affi liation of the guidebooks (by route, reference or combined
type) was determined, and it was established that during the study period, no
dominance of any one type of guidebooks was observed, their entire typological
palette has been suffi ciently represented.
Keywords: Lviv, tourist guidebook, history, chronological period, culture,
historic and architectural sites, city myth, national visions.
