Defence Date
Annotation
Organizational and legal principles of activities of pedagogical libraries in Lviv
in 1920s – 1930s have been analyzed. The peculiarities of acquisition of public
and school libraries, and libraries of Ukrainian teachers’, pedagogical and national
cultural associations («Shevchenko Scientifi c Society», «Prosvita», «Ukrainian
Pedagogical Association», «Mother school», «Teacher community», «Mutual aid
of teachers in Ukrainian») have been defi ned. It has been proved that school and
gymnasium libraries in Lviv during the interwar period were formed under the
infl uence of specialization of the educational institution. These libraries played an
important role in the organization of educational process. It has been defi ned that
pedagogical libraries of public institutions and state libraries operated within the legal
fi eld of The Second Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the funds of these libraries
were completed according to their own concept of development and their material
and fi nancial resources.
By the specifi c examples, the poor state of provision of education institutions in
Lviv with pedagogical literature has been shown; governmental measures aimed at
improvement of the material and technical level of school libraries, renewal of funds,
the bases of which in most libraries of Lviv were the books that had been published
before the World War I have been defi ned. It has been emphasized that many textbooks
that humiliated dignity of Ukrainians, distorted historical past, provoked confl icts as
part of the educational process, caused natural indignation of Ukrainian youth and
national consciousness of the public of the land in general. It has been emphasized the scientifi c, organizational and publishing activities of the
State Central Pedagogical Library that played very important role in social and cultural
life of Lviv during the interwar period. It has been indicated that library authorities and
library Council tried to collect literature that would represent not only various branches
of humanities but also main directions of public opinion at that time. The successes
and failures of the library authorities in the publishing fi eld have been summed up.
An important «еducational» component in its activities (holding specialized training
courses, conferences, book exhibitions and other thematically related to these activities)
has been emphasized.
Library cards of Ukrainian and Polish students in Lviv, their common and distinctive
features as well as the impact of national factors on literature choice for extracurricular
reading have been analyzed. Scientifi c works, fi ction literature, reference works
that aroused the greatest interest among children have been also defi ned. It has been
confi rmed that reading preferences of the youth were effected by family environment,
national cultural associations and teachers of educational institutions, particularly their
extracurricular activities related to aesthetic and patriotic education of the younger
generation. The important role of school libraries in cultural and educational life of the
society at that time has been proved and their impact on the national consciousness of
the youth has been regarded.
