Mass-media of Italy in the context of globalization progress

The thesis is dedicated to the study of contemporary Italian media at the aspect of
the globalization of mass communications. For the first time in the Ukrainian mediastudy
a comprehensive research of the Italian media of the late XX and the early XXI century is
made. The features of the course of globalization in every type of media – print,
audiovisual, digital are determined. The proposal is made to review the system of Italian
media in an integrated manner and at the same time with a focus on the most specific to
each of its globalization phenomena on three levels – economy, technology, and content.
Italian print media appears in the measurement of digitalization, broadcasting –
convergence; public and commercial television – towards transformation from highly
concentrated structure into the fragmented space. In each type of media the manifestations
of globalization phenomena, methods of editorial work, changes in the program content,
marketing strategies as a response to the challenges of globalization are analyzed.
The improvement was made in the experience on the forms and methods of
public broadcasting of the European countries at the conditions of commercial market
and subject to the legal aspects. Shortcomings in the functioning of the triangle “state –
public broadcasting – civil society” system are determinated. Attention has been
devoted to the role of the individual of journalist, editor, publisher in the course of
globalization phenomena in mass communication.
Innovative models of convergence radio and television are discovered. The
paradigm of digital journalism with non-profit model of digital media is expanded. It is
proved that there is a necessity for Ukraine to study the Italian media experience in
order to borrow successful models, strategies and techniques for adequate perception of
the challenges of globalization and timely response to manifestations of negative phe-
nomena that could threaten the functioning of free and independent journalism.
