Information on the thesis

The present thesis is concerned with the two-way lexical loans between Chinese
and English. Falling back on a vast corpus of evidence of the outcomes of the inter-
language interaction substantiated in this disquisition are the types of mutual
penetrations of lexemes in a series of conceptual spheres and in the lexicon and
derivation of these two typologically distant languages at large. Single and multiple
affiliation of the borrowings studied with the corresponding ecologies and their
recurrence in the lexicographic and textual media have been ascertained. The
structural-semantic adaptation of Chinese borrowings has been elucidated and their
complete representation in the sections for the chosen varieties of English according
to the GloWbE corpus has been revealed. The areal-ecological status of the
borrowings in question as to their attestation(s) in the dictionaries and indices studied
and according vs. adverse reflection in the GloWbE recurrence patterns has been
(dis)proved. A factorial study of the relationships and inferences between the lexemes
of Chinese origin in English suggests a subtle and tiered network of correspondences
within these intriguing reflexes endowed with inherited and newly developed traits
and references. Although the examples testifying to a role in both types of borrowings
of a proven Japanese intermediary are sporadic in the overall selection they
nonetheless add to the one-to-two English-oriental traffic of mostly culturally loaded
words. Multiple sources of evidence are arrayed in the query-sensitive ordering to
provide for a layered construal of evidence enabling the adstratal-ecological
patterning of Chinese penetrations into English and their detailed semantic analysis
A study of anglicisms is Chinese undertaken in the study is meant to contribute
to the general understanding of the bond with a plausible lexiсographic Goerlachian
project with respect to the importation of English into Mandarin. A special attention
was meant to be paid to the elucidation of various aspects of the problem of the two-
way English-Chinese borrowing for the People’s Republic of China. A calculus of
types of borrowings on these grounds is concomitant to the attempted model-based
formalization of pragmatic-cognitive factors. The culture sensitive interpretation of
the overall process of borrowings proves asymmetric with a stronger bend for the
Chinese contribution nonetheless leaving the door ajar for a deeper understanding of
the recipient meandering in the semantization of English borrowings in Mandarin.
