Annotation

Research  relevance  is  determined  by  the  need  of  developing  a  linguistic  theory
related  to  establishment  and  evolution  of  word  formation  terminology  on  the  basis  of
newly  introduced  sources,  namely  Halychyna  school  grammar  books  of  the  Ukrainian
language of the second half of the 19th – the first half of the 20th century.  The purpose of
the thesis is to systematize and to  describe the terms denoting word formation concepts
recorded in Halychyna school grammars of the Ukrainian language of the second half of
the 19th – the first half of the 20th century by way of tracing the appearance, the origin,
the evolution  characteristics  and the  role of  these units in further development  of word
formation terminology.
The  thesis  consists  of  introduction,  four  chapters,  conclusions,  lists  of  references
(360 units) and sources (63 units), as well as supplements which include information of
biographic  nature  about  relatively  unknown  authors  of  grammars,  materials  to  historic
dictionary of the Ukrainian word formation terms and a table of word formation categories
and word formation classes in Ohonovskyi’s grammar.
The introduction rationalizes the relevance of research topic; formulates the aim and
the  tasks;  outlines  the  sources  of  factual  material;  exposes  the  object,  the  subject,  the
methods  of  research,  the  academic  novelty  and  the  practical  importance  of  obtained
results; provides the data on testing the main provisions of the study and the number of
publications,  as  well  research scope.  The  first  chapter  discloses  the  aspects of studying
linguistic terminology in general and word formation in particular, namely the theoretical
framework and methods of analysis applied to its establishment and evolution.  The second
chapter  is  devoted  to  studying  the  factors  which  made  possible  the  appearance  and
development  of  word  formation  terms  in  the  sources  under  discussion.  Chapter  three
examines the correlation of form and content of word formation terms.  Chapter four is
devoted to tracing the connections of the terminological framework of Halychyna school
grammars of the Ukrainian language of the second half of the 19th – the first half of the
20th century with the research of historical word formation and further development of
modern word formation theory.
Key  words:  term,  terminology,  terminology  studies,  word  formation  term,  word
formation terminology, linguistic consciousness, author’s concept of term, term form, term
