Annotation

Special  aspects  of  the  scholar’s  individual  style  are  defined  in  the  thesis  by
analysing literary and non-literary terms functioning in the philological works of Ivan
Denysiuk.  Various  approaches  to  the  dimension  of  a  linguistic  persona,  which
combines  linguistic,  psychological,  social  factors  and  opens  new  possibilities  for
further study of functional characteristics of a language and language activity were
analysed. The understanding of an author’s individual style in literary and scientific
text is summarized. Term unit (TU) is one of keynotes of individual style of scientific
texts by Ivan Denysiuk. This statement determined the logic of our research and its
structure.
The  theoretical  background  in  respect  of  a  literary  term  was  considered.
Literary terms bear not only nominative load but also convey aesthetic information
and  assess  literary  phenomena.  Aesthetic  assessment,  in  one  way  or  other,  is
connected  to  the  problem  of  term  connotation,  which  sometimes  becomes  a
pronounced keynote in the field of literary studies. Literary term is characterized with
ambiguity; low level of unification; connotativity; «openness» i.e. it is open to other
term  systems;  direct  dependence  on  a  context;  term  is  in  a  close  contact  with  the
individual style of a writer, scholar. Consequently, terms used in literary works do
not often change completely but become «overgrown» by new meanings. The present
work  outlines  unique  features  of  literary  TUs  «lexicographical  dimensions».  The
analysis  of  literary  TUs  in  scholar’s  philological  works  was  performed.  Literary
terms present in the scientific heritage of I. Denysiuk were split according to thematic
fields  as  follows:  «Literature  and  Literary  Studies:  basic  concepts»,  «Genology»,
«Text Poetics», «Literary and Publishing process». The analysis of motivation of new
literary TUs, attributed to the scholar, was performed based on the onomasiological
approach to motivation, where the definition of motivation is related to the concept of
the motivational indicator. The grammatical structure of literary terms as well as their
genologic characteristics were described.
Extradomain  and  general  scientific  terms  as  well  as  patterns  of  their
functioning  in  scholar’s  philological  texts  were  analysed.  Regular  indicators  of
general scientific TUs functioning in literary text were considered. It was defined that
general scientific terms undergo a kind of adaptation in a literary context. Such TUs
do not lose their meaning; the scholar uses  general scientific meaning of a term in
combination  with  literary  one.  General  scientific  TUs  often  become  one  of  the
multiple  components  of  a  complex  TU,  at  that,  there  are  several  characteristic
features  of  their  functioning  traced:  as  a  rule,  they  become  one  of  the  main
components and if the number of such components increases, their general scientific
character  becomes  cancelled  out.  In  the  texts  by  Ivan  Denysiuk  the  organizational
function of general term in the context of literary semantic field was outlined. The
analysis of functioning of TUs taken from other (not artistic) term systems in literary
texts was performed. Literary TUs that underwent determinologization in the process
of  actualization  lose  term  meaning.  Frequently,  such  TUs  preserve  their  lexical
meaning and are actively used as components of metaphorical expressions when the
scholar presents his main arguments. The analysis of scientific texts afforded grounds
to conclude that there exists a problem in determining the term meaning in respect of
non-literary  TUs.  The  reasons  for  this  are  as  follows:  when  used  TUs  pertain  to
various  spheres  of  human  activity,  and  «irregularity»  of  term  meaning  losing  or
preserving by such TUs due to the influence of a figurative language.
Key words: Ukrainian terminology; term unit; term system; term motivation;
linguistic  persona; individual  style;  determinologization; literary  term;  extradomain
term; general scientific term.
