Information on the thesis

The dissertation is the first attempt at the complex analysis of semantic derivation
which occurs against the background of processes of terminologization,
transterminologization and determinologization in biological terminology of the Ukrainian
language. The paper substantiates the theoretical and methodological principles of the
study of semantic derivation in biological terminology; explores the external and internal
linguistic causes of this process; describes the terminologization of common language
units in biological terminology (metaphorical and metonymical transfer of meanings of
commonly used words in the layer of terms); characterizes the process of
transterminologization, i.e. rethinking of terms of other terminological systems in
biological one and migration of biological terms into other terminological systems;
considers the determinologization of biological terms and analyzes the semantic
transformations which arise in the semantic structure of a biological term used in
journalistic, artistic, colloquial speech or other terminological systems.
Semantic derivation – is the process of semantic evolution of the word, which
determines the development of its semantic structure being a consequence of complex
interaction of foreign and intralinguistic factors and affects the entire lexical-semantic
system of language. Modern biological terminology is considered as a complex, holistic,
dynamic, and structured system of term units which are interconnected and develop
according to the laws of language and under the influence of extralinguistic factors.
Terminologization is defined as the process of naming a new concept in biological
terminology, in which the words of common language undergo semantic evolution.
Attention is focused on the important role of terminologization in the context of national
term formation. The formation of term meanings based on the terminologization of
common words is based on metaphor and metonymy.
Transterminologization is interpreted as the process of naming a new concept in
biological terminology, in which semantic evolution is experienced by term units of other
scientific fields. It is shown that transterminologization reflects current trends in science,
including integration and differentiation. Modern biological terminology is characterized
by intersystem interaction not only with related systems of terms but also the terminology
of mathematical sciences.
Determinologization – is the process of migration of biological terms outside the
terminology, which is accompanied by the emergence of a new meaning. The paper
highlights the peculiarities of determinologization of biological terminology in fiction,
mass media texts, colloquial register, and the corpus of phraseology.
