The philosophy of the 20 th century focused its attention on the study of a person in
relation to the society in which he/she is located. The question arose as to the formation of
human self-consciousness in a certain social and psychological environment. Such
tendency explains thematic justification for the research of the concept of ‘identity’.
Herein the evolution of the interpretation of the concept of identity in philosophical,
social and psychological dimensions is scrutinized, its contemporary interpretations are
singled out. Historical and philosophical analysis of the characteristics of the Ukrainian
mentality is important in the context of Ukrainian cultural identity research. As the
fundamental basis one can consider the works of the famous Ukrainian philosophy
researchers, who study the problems of national mentality, disposition of the Ukrainian
people and existence of the Ukrainian nation, its spiritual dimensions, the problem of self-
consciousness by means of interpretation of the peculiarities of the Ukrainian culture.
In the present research the complexity of the formation of national identity that was
largely researched by the foreign and Ukrainian scholars is analyzed. Historically formed
approaches towards the interpretation of the term ‘national identity’ are indicated and its
cultural foundation is singled out. The study highlights the nation as a cultural community
that combines a unique way of thinking, the embodiment of the national idea with
common cultural and ethical norms, values and symbols.
The attempt has been made to isolate and research the contemporary identity model
of the society – the model of development, determination of socio-cultural orientation of
its own identity; a complex model that is actualized or de-actualized depending on the
factors predetermined by the peculiarities of personal life, socio-cultural environment and
intergroup relations. It is indicated that the future of the national states and the world
community lies in the diversity of the multicultural context, in the dialogue and
recognition of such diversity.
The problems of contemporary multicultural world, which under the influence of
rapid globalization faces contradictions and conflicts in the socio-cultural relations are
studied herein. Today all over the world we are witnessing a crisis of individual and
collective identities, which notably revealed itself before the beginning of the 21 st century
and is associated with globalization. This is caused by the decay of many habitual rules
and reinterpretation of values, rapid change of social processes and difficulties in
integration into the modern fleeting environment. Therefore, the problem of identity at the
turn of the 20 th – 21 st centuries has become the subject for the research by the outstanding
Western scholars, who are working in various fields of socio-humanitarian knowledge.
The problem of the crisis in today’s globalized world is examined in the present research.
It is indicated that cultures are being transformed under postmodern and postcolonial
conditions, therefore in today’s world of global changes a person experiencing the crisis of
identity. The problems that bring around globalization processes on the socio-cultural level,
in the context of local and global interaction in the process of formation of cultural
identity are determined. Globalization, virtualization and fragmentation processes cause
the rupture of social memory, through which national and cultural identification is
realized. Dilution of social memory of a particular nation and culture in the global
information and communication environment complicates identification.
The analysis of the transformation of the Ukrainian identity in the realities of
globalization is conducted. It is found that the studies of the transformation of the national
and cultural identity in the era of globalization becomes possible by means of grounding
the dependence of the identity on the socio-economic context on which one’s own identity
is constructed, changed or confirmed. The problem of national identity formation is
intensified by the globalization processes that dissipate the national culture and increase
the marginalization of the Ukrainian society.
Complex and unpredictable socio-cultural changes determine the nature of modern
culture and increase interest in the problems caused by globalization, such as: risks and
challenges to national cultures, unification of nations’ existence, elimination of ethnic
identity. The modern state of the Ukrainian culture is examined. The problems and
prospects of Ukrainian society and its cultural identity in contemporary globalization
processes are outlined. Archetypal frame of the existence of the Ukrainian ethnos that
provides structural integrity of the identity of a person and the national culture, is shaping
the outlook of the Ukrainian nation in the context of globalization, is determined herein.
It is indicated that the cultural identity in globalization and its influence on the
shaping of the outlook of the Ukrainian people need comprehensive scientific research.
