Information on the thesis

The dissertation is devoted to the study of lexicographic parameters, the dialect
features of Ukrainian vocabulary and phenomena of Ukrainian-Polish interference in
the monuments of Ukrainian-Polish and Polish-Ukrainian lexicography of the 19^th century.
The study was based on twenty one printed and handwritten lexicographic monuments of
the 19^th century, with a total of about 90,900 lexical units.
The first chapter “Historical and Methodological Foundations of Problem Study The
lexicographic monuments” considers the place of Lexicography in the system of linguistic
disciplines, and theoretical aspects of the analysis of Lexicography. The experience of
studying printed and handwritten Ukrainian-Polish lexicographic monuments of the 19^th
century in linguistic writings has been covered. The methods and techniques by which the
results of the Ukrainian dimension of Ukrainian-Polish and Polish-Ukrainian lexicography
of the 19^th century have been explained based on the analysis of lexicographic parameters
and features of Ukrainian vocabulary recorded in the monuments.
The second chapter “Ukrainian-Polish and Polish-Ukrainian Dictionaries of the 19^th
century as Independent Lexicographic Monuments” is devoted to the characteristics of one
printed monument and four handwritten monuments. The peculiarities of macro- and
microstructure of the Dictionaries have been determined. The Ukrainian vocabulary was
recorded according to the historical and etymological orthography with the spelling
elements of Meletius Smotrytskyi, and to the phonetic orthography of the Ukrainian
language. The features of the Ukrainian language in the Church Slavonic vocabulary of
the printed monument have been revealed. The Ukrainian part of the manuscript
Dictionaries included the vocabulary of the spoken folk language. These Dictionaries
recorded the appellatives, onyms and phrasems. The monument contained the vocabulary
with local peculiarities of the Boyko, Hutsul, Bukovyna, and Transcarpathian subdialects
and Lemko–Boiko–San-river region contiguity. The features testify to the Polish-language
influence on Ukrainian vocabulary.
In the third chapter “Ukrainian-Polish Glossaries of the 19^th Century” thirteen printed
and handwritten monuments has been highlighted. Scientific works by Ivan Vahylevych
contained five Glossaries. Among them – one phraseographic monument, and also Boiko,
Hucul, Lemko dialect monuments. The study has characterized three monuments
incorporated in annexes to literary work collections, four Ukrainian-Polish lexicographic
monuments – in periodicals, and one – in the guidebook by Jan Gregorowicz. The Ukrainian
vocabulary mostly was transmitted in Polish and enclosed in the Polish alphabet. The
macro- and microstructure in the monuments has been analyzed. The largest thematic
groups of vocabulary in the Glossaries have been determined. Its has been established that
the most monuments represented the dialect features of different groups of subdialects in the
South-western supradialect, and one of the South-eastern part of the Polissya subdialects of
the Northern supradialect, and the Middle Dnipro-river subdialects of the South-eastern
supradialect of the Ukrainian language. Ukrainian vocabulary with features of the Polish
language have been studied. Ukrainian-Polish equivalents have been analyzed in the other
two printed and handwritten Glossaries of the 19^th century Ukrainian language. The
monuments contained Ukrainian-Polish parallels which were mainly the Pre-Slavonic
vocabulary with the phonetic differences in Ukrainian and Polish Languages.
The analyzed materials has shown that the microstructure of the title words contained
grammatical, etymological characteristics, exemplification. Title words were translated with
one-word equivalents and descriptive. The studied Ukrainian vocabulary of the Ukrainian-
Polish and Polish-Ukrainian dictionaries of the 19th century revealed dialect features at the
phonetic, accentuation, morphological, syntactic language levels.
