Demographic security of Lviv region: human-geographic problems

The dissertation examines theoretical and methodological issues of social
geographic of demographic security. It clarifies the definition of regional demographic
security from the perspectives of social geography and improves the system of criteria and
methodologies for evaluation of the integral index of demographic security in
administrative units of the region. The research identifies main social geographic and
behavioral factors of demographic security in Lviv region.
Practical implementation of theoretical thesis of the dissertation consists in the
complex analysis of demographic security indicators (population growth rate, fertility rate,
total fertility rate, reproduction rate, life expectancy, migration balance, total mortality,
mortality of children under one year, the coefficient of population aging, the demographic
pressure of disabled people) in 29 administrative and territorial units of Lviv region.
The research calculates the integral index of regional demographic security, which
is acquired by aggregation of standardized data. Discovered and mapped dynamics and
spatial differences of demographic security integral index in Lviv region and it’s
administrative units. According to the spatial differences identified in 2013 three groups of
administrative units is pointed out.
The first group with a level of demographic hazard (0–0,382): Brody, Zhydachiv,
Peremyshlyany, Radekhiv regions and Borislav and Morshyn cities. The second group
includes 21 administrative territorial units with a level of demographic hazard
(0,383–0,618) which is prevalent to Lviv region in general. The second group of divided
by trends of demographic security changes in 2013 versus 2008 to subgroup A with
negative demographic trends (Gorodok, Zolochiv, Mykolayiv, Pustomyty, Sambir and
Sokal regions; Lviv, Drohobych, Novyi Rozdil, Sambir, Stryi and Chervonohrad cities)
and subgroup B with barely noticeable positive trends (Busk, Drohobych, Kamyanka-
Buzka Mostyska, Skole, Turka, Stary Sambir regions and city of Truskavets). The third
group includes Zhovkva and Yavoriv regions with a level of demographic risk
(0,619–0,854). Dissertation provides comparative geographical analysis of regional
demographic security geographic of Ukraine.
The research defines recommendations for accomplishing demographic security of
Lviv region and some administrative units considering their social development.
