The international seminar “Cross-border sustainability of critical transport infrastructure in Ukraine and its impact on the economy and society” was held

On July 28, 2023, scientists from the Department of Economic and Social Geography named after Professor Oleg Shabliy of the University of Lviv and the Department of Engineering of the University of Birmingham organized, within the framework of the “Twinning for Identity, Sovereignty and Resilience” project, the international seminar “Cross-border sustainability of critical transport infrastructure in Ukraine and its impact on the economy and society”. The event was held in Warsaw in a mixed format in English.

The coordinator of the seminar from the University of Birmingham, Stergios A. Mitoulis, outlined in his report the conflict resilience framework for building critical infrastructure. Dr Sotirios Argyroudis’s report “Trade-offs between sustainability and sustainable solutions in adapting infrastructure to climate change: the example of bridges in Ukraine” highlighted the work on combining the requirements of the green economy and post-war reconstruction.

Scientists of the Department of Economic and Social Geography of LNU named after Ivan Franko Iryna Gudzelyak, Olga Mamchur, Iryna Wanda, Lyubov Kotyk, Yuriy Borsuk presented reports-lectures “Socio-geographical problems of the development of Lviv region”, “Economic effectiveness of the use of railway passenger routes of the Western region of Ukraine”, “Practical use of geology in the transport industry of the Western of the region of Ukraine”, “Socio-economic prerequisites for the functioning of suburban railway transport”. Each of the reports was discussed during round tables, where short reports by invited experts were also presented.

Researchers from the University of Birmingham, as well as experts on the development of critical infrastructure, who provide recommendations to the government of the United Kingdom regarding the future post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, joined the work of the seminar from the British side.

Ukrainian geographers and representatives of the city government of Lviv were also invited to the international seminar for presentations, in particular, the head of the department of investments and projects of the Department of Investments and Projects of the Lviv City Council Oleg Veklin, associate professor of the Department of Geography of Ukraine and Tourism of Ternopil National Pedagogical University named after Volodymyr Hnatyuk Ivan Rudakevich, associate professors of the Department of Geography and Natural Sciences of Vasyl Stefanyk National University of Prykarpattia Roman Slivka and Iryna Zakutynska, assistant professors of the Department of Tourism of Lviv Polytechnic National University Maria Luschyk, Maryana Yaroshevych, a graduate student of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv Zlata Login.

It is essential that the discussion of the spatial problems of the critical infrastructure of the city of Lviv, the Lviv region and the Western regions of Ukraine in general, will contribute to the formation of the report and recommendations of the British colleagues for the Government of the United Kingdom in the post-war reconstruction of the infrastructure of Ukraine.
