Linguistic expression of time and space in Ukrainian chimeric (magic) prose
Defence Date
Annotation
The dissertation gives the peculiarities of functioning of means of temporal and spatial
expression according to the author style of the Ukrainian chimeric prose, namely, the story
«Iryi» by V. Drozd, the novel «Swan flock» by V. Zemliak and the novel «The house on the hill» by V. Shevchuk. The means that serve to mark temporal and spatial displacements are
analysed and the types of these deformations are listed.
The work gives an extension of some theoretical aspects of analysis of units of the same
group. For example, division of lexical and grammatical means of expression of temporal and
spatial semantics on major and peripheral is explained. The first group counts adverbs,
prepositional-case forms, nouns and verbs. The second one counts adjectives, pronouns and
numerals. Major ones express, as a rule, all categorical values of time or space, show
consistency, keep the respective meanings out of context and prevail quantitatively. The
peripheral means acuire respective semantics only in context and function rather sporadically.
Verbs of motion are classified into the means of expression of locative meaning.
Comprehensive approach allowing to examine both formal and content component units
is defined in order to study the lexical and grammatical means of temporal and spatial
expression.
It is determined that the functioning of means of temporal and spatial expression in the
analyzed works has a number of special features that are related: a) to the peculiarities of a
respective literary style; b) to the individual style of the writer. They show up in quantitative
and qualitative terms.
The study found the peculiarities of the use of means of temporal and spatial expression
in the style of authors of Ukrainian magic prose, for example, the functioning of adverbs and
prepositional-case forms of locative semantics with verbs of non-regular groups, the use of
atypical units of semantics. It was found that the analyzed works have space boundaries, topos
and time periods acquire emotional connotations, experience is objectified in certain items,
feelings are expressed by the means of time etc.
It is defined that the temporal and spatial displacements are achieved through the use of
language units in unusual meanings. A large number of temporal displacemnts is associated
with the use of spatial means for adding temporal semantics. It is stated that spatial
displacements manifest in discrepancy: a) of sizes; b) of functional properties of spaces. The
displacements in the functional properties of spaces are explained by the fact that: a) a jacket
of physical bodies is not rigid and unchangeable as it is in the real world; b) unsteady physical
bodies can become solid; c) people and things can perform uncharacteristic functions and thus
acquire fantastic properties; d) there is no concept of holistic body functioning and the
traditional hierarchy of body structure.
It was found that temporal displacements consist in: a) exaggerating or diminuating time
values; b) traditional performing of certain actions, repeatability; c) synchronization of events;
d) time change on the request or need of a hero; e) transferring from the present to the past,
the future or staying in a timeless space; e) objectification of time by spatial means. Temporal
and spatial displacements are considered typical features of this literary type.
Comparative and statistical analyses of functioning of means of temporal and spatial
expression in magic prose is conducted. Units of time-spatial syncretic semantics are also
detected in the works of Ukrainian chimeric prose.
